Objects that do not refer backwards
A single band is one line of metal with no ornament, no stone, and no join. There is nothing on it to associate with an earlier period, which is why it is the form people reach for at a threshold — a move, a change of work, a first day, a year that is starting over.
Why the smallest pieces are the hardest to make
Removing material is easier than keeping it. A small, plain form has nowhere to hide a mistake: no stone to set over a flaw, no texture to disguise an uneven line. The pieces in this axis are the lightest we make and the slowest to finish.
The first thing you carry
In several Himalayan traditions a piece is given rather than chosen — at a birth, at a departure, at the start of a long walk. The object is not the point. What is being marked is that something has begun and is now being carried.
