Black in Jewellery: Why the Darkest Stone Is the Rarest Choice

Count them
Open any jewellery catalogue and start counting. Metals, white stones, warm stones, coloured stones. Black shows up rarely, and when it does it's usually an accent. A single dark bead. A black cord. An enamel detail.
Not because black is hard to wear. It's one of the few colours that works against essentially any skin tone and any clothing. And not because black is unattractive. It's because black is difficult to photograph, difficult to light, and difficult to tell apart from one material to the next.
The photograph problem
Two stones side by side, one white and one black, shot under the same light. The white stone shows you its surface: how light enters, travels, and comes back. The black stone shows you a silhouette. Every piece of information a photograph normally carries, colour, depth, internal structure, is gone.
That's a commercial constraint, not an aesthetic one. A material that can't be photographed well can't be sold well at scale, which is a large part of why the market concentrates on lighter stones.
The finishing problem
Black also forgives less. On a pale stone a small variation in surface finish is invisible. On black, every inconsistency in the polish reads as a change in colour. A matte surface that looks fine on white quartz looks stained on obsidian.
So black pieces take longer per unit, and more of them get rejected at inspection. Neither of those facts shows up in a price comparison, and both of them are real.
What black does that nothing else does
Two things, and they're both physical.
It absorbs. A white stone throws light back at whoever is looking at it. A black stone takes light in. Against skin, the effect is that the stone reads as a void rather than a highlight. It disappears into shadow and comes back as a shape.
It sets temperature. Black picks up the temperature of its surroundings faster and more visibly than any other colour. A black stone in a cold room is cold. Against a warm hand it isn't, and the change is a lot more noticeable than it would be on a lighter stone.
Why we finish it matte
A polished black surface works like a small mirror. What you see in it is the room. A matte surface absorbs instead, and what you see is the stone: the slight variations in the glass, the flow banding, the bubbles from the original cooling.
That choice has a second effect. Matte obsidian slowly brightens where it contacts skin, so the piece builds up its own record of being handled. Polished stone doesn't do that at all.
Which is the point
A material that's hard to shoot, hard to finish and commercially unpopular isn't an obvious choice for a small workshop.
It does behave differently from everything else on the market, though, in ways that are obvious to someone holding it and invisible to someone scrolling past it. On a screen, black is the flattest colour there is. In the hand, it's the one that changes most.
